Agence Française de Développement (AFD) - Construction of roads transform residents’ lives
In Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL), poor road conditions have long limited access to schools, hospitals, and markets — and even put lives at risk. Through the ASAL Roads Rehabilitation Project, the Government of Kenya, the European Union, and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) are transforming local infrastructure in the regions of Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia, Marsabit, Meru, and Tharaka-Nithi.
By improving over 100 km of rural roads using labor-based methods, the project has created jobs, will strengthen local security, and ensure safer, all-weather access for more than 3.8 million people. It also promotes women’s participation, with over 25,000 women trained and employed since January 2025.
By improving access to schools, markets, and health services, and helping with safety and mobility in arid and semi-arid lands, the project is opening up new possibilities for local communities.
Trans.Lieu was engaged by Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and visited Maralal to witness how the road construction is transforming more than just the landscape, it is changing lives. The video clip is available in English and French.
