International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) - Pemba Island, Tanzania

The residents of Pemba, an island off the coast of Tanzania, used to earn a living from farming and fishing, but poor soil conditions due to climate change and overfishing by international fishing fleets has led to a huge decline in their incomes.

Young women like Saumu are relying on an alternative source of revenue which grows in abundance around them. Seaweed farming has transformed their livelihoods thanks to the Land Degradation and Food Security project, funded by UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Government of Tanzania with co-financing from GEF, the Global Environment Facility.
