International Labour Organization (ILO) - PROSPECTS (Photography)

In 2021, seventy youth aged between 15-34 years, from both host and refugee communities in Turkana and Garissa Counties, were equipped with hands-on industrial welding skills through the PROSPECTS programme, enhancing their employability and their entrepreneurship capabilities. The programme deliberately targeted youth from the two counties especially focusing on female youth and persons with disabilities. The training adopted a dual learning approach where the youth attended institutional learning which included classroom sessions and practical hands-on exercises, and work-based learning in various industries across Nairobi County. The learners graduated in June 2021 from the East Africa Institute of Welding in Nairobi, Kenya which is the only training provider in the country that has incorporated specialized industrial welding into their curriculum.

Trans.Lieu was commisioned to produce a set of photographs focusing on some of the graduates, and understand better what they have learnt, their motivation of becoming a welder and their future dreams.
