Agence Française de Développement (AFD) - East Africa’s cities: centers of consumption or engines of growth?

Eastern Africa is experiencing one of the fastest rates of urbanization in the world, with annual growth exceeding 5%. With over 50% of urban residents living in informal settlements, AFD has developed an integrated strategy that combines infrastructure, local governance, and innovation. In this video, Gautier Singh-Kohler, an AFD expert, outlines the challenges posed by rapid and relatively late urbanization, as well as the concrete responses being implemented on the ground. From water, drainage, and transport projects benefiting more than three million people to climate resilience programs such as CICLIA, AFD is working at every level. The Urban Fabric Initiative illustrates an innovative participatory approach that brings communities and local authorities together to transform public spaces. This expert perspective explores the future of cities in Eastern Africa.
