UNICEF Africa - R-WASH initiative: delivering reliable water in Dollow, Somalia
In Dollow, Somalia, the R-WASH initiative is transforming lives and driving local economic resilience. By pioneering Managed Aquifer Recharge and building climate-resilient infrastructure, the programme replaces years of reliance on unsafe river water with safe, sustainable access for refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities alike.
Beyond improving public health and social cohesion, reliable water empowers local entrepreneurs, small business owners, and livestock farmers by lowering operating costs and building confidence to invest. Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through KfW and implemented by UNICEF and UNHCR, R-WASH strengthens local utilities to secure cost-effective, long-term water services for generations to come.
